O πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ Μπαράκ Ομπάμα κατέθεσε επίσημο αίτημα στο Κογκρέσο για ένα έκτακτο κονδύλι ύψους 3,7 δισεκατομμυρίων δολαρίων προκειμένου να αντιμετωπίσει την αυξανόμενη εισροή παιδιών - παράνομων μεταναστών από τα σύνορα με το Μεξικό, κυρίως για να επιταχύνει τις διαδικασίες απέλασης.
Η αμερικανική κυβέρνηση ελπίζει ότι το Κογκρέσο θα ψηφίσει τις επιπλέον πιστώσεις προκειμένου να αυξηθούν οι δυνατότητες κράτησης των παράνομων μεταναστών, δικαστικής διαχείρισης των υποθέσεων απελάσεων και παροχής υπηρεσιών στους ανήλικους πρόσφυγες, εξήγησαν αξιωματούχοι του Λευκού Οίκου.

The Obama administration plans to delay — for now — asking Congress to change existing laws to allow unaccompanied children coming here illegally from Central America to be deported more quickly to their home countries.
President Barack Obama signaled last week that he’ll request additional funding and the expanded legal authority to respond to the influx of minors trying to enter the United States without authorization — an increase that has amounted to a humanitarian crisis.
But immigrant-rights groups were furious at the proposed tweaks to laws dealing with unaccompanied minors. When the White House sends its funding request on Tuesday, it won’t include major policy changes, such as the broader legal authority that would effectively make it easier to send these migrant children home, according to congressional aides and an administration official.
We already sent a letter to the congressional leadership last week on our desire for expanded authorities,” an Obama administration official said Monday. “We are still seeking those authorities and have made clear we will work with Congress to get those authorities.”
The official said the emergency funding request will be sent separately. The administration’s decision was first reported by the Associated Press.
Advocates were quick to criticize the administration’s plans to ask for the broader legal authority, which the White House is seeking to send a clear deterrence message to immigrants trying to come here illegally. Dozens of organizations — including the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the American Civil Liberties Union — sent a letter to Obama last week urging him to reconsider his proposal.
“The administration’s recent statements have placed far greater emphasis on deterrence of migration than on the importance of protection of children seeking safety,” the groups wrote. “At a time when the region is confronted with a major humanitarian crisis, our nation cannot compromise on fundamental principles of compassion, fairness, and due process, nor on our international refugee protection obligations.”
The additional funding to respond to the crisis on the southern border will be a tough battle on its own. The White House is seeking more than $2 billion to pay for what Obama described as an “aggressive deterrence strategy’ and “sustained border security surge” and will include funding for resources such as a boost in immigration court judges.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Monday that he expects an announcement on the details of the supplemental request to come Tuesday. The money, Earnest said, will help pay for resources that will “help us more rapidly and efficiently process the immigration cases that are currently backlogged as it relates to a surge that we’ve seen at the southwest border.”
More than 52,000 unaccompanied minors, as well as 39,000 adults with children, have been apprehended trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally during this fiscal year, according to the administration.
