Conference-Workshop: Politics and Energy In the Eastern Mediterranean

Η πρώτη εκδήλωση ήταν το συνέδριο “A Bridge under Troubled Waters? Energy Discoveries and the Geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean” που πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 27 - 28 Νοέμβριος 2013, και το δεύτερο ήταν η έρευνα εργαστήριο "Energy in the EasternMed: Transcending Geography, Time, and Money" η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 7 και 8 Μαΐου 2014.

Το θέμα της ομιλίας του :"The Geopolitical and Geoeconomical Importance of Hydrocarbon Exploitation in Offshore Eastern Mediterranean and Greece in Meeting the Forthcoming European Energy Crisis"

Conference-Workshop: Politics and Energy In the Eastern Mediterranean

This conference-workshop focuses on the changing patterns of alliances in the Eastern Mediterranean in the context of the discovery of the new economic resources in the region, and over the backdrop of the political upheavals of the “Arab Spring”. These domestic political changes in the states of the Eastern Mediterranean, coupled with the immense economic stakes raised by the discovery of gas and oil, leave the existing alliance structures under pressure, pushing regional powers to balance each other, seeking new alliances and international strategies. The conference-workshop's main purpose is to investigate the implications of recent offshore energy discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean – discoveries which are widely recognized as a game-changer, in both the global energy arena and in the geopolitics of the Middle East. In this regard, the workshop also focuses on the balance of power between Israel, Turkey, Greece and Cyprus as well as between the United States, Russia and China in the wide region, as well as foreign and domestic constraints relating to energy and politics in the relationship between Arab states.

The present conference-workshop is based on two previous research events which were held at the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and were co-planned and sponsored by the Israel Office of the Konrad Andenauer Stiftung. The first event was the conference “A Bridge under Troubled Waters? Energy Discoveries and the Geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean”, which was held on November 27-28, 2013, and the second event was the research workshop "Energy in the EasternMed: Transcending Geography, Time, and Money" which took place in May 7-8, 2014. Based on these two previous conferences, this workshop will further explore how the energy discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean could impact regional political dynamics between the different players.
