5 Lesser Known Concentration Camps From The Holocaust

The extensive list of active concentration camps used by the Nazis in World War Two would be too long to write. The major camp names went down in history, Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Bergen-Belsen are just three of hundreds of extermination or labor camps the Jewish population were interned in during the war. Not only Jewish people were victims of the horror. Anyone who did not fit in with the Nazis fanatical extremism was at risk.
Some of these camps have been turned into museums, or monuments, since the end of World War Two whereas other lesser known camps have not been maintained, but this doesn’t make them any less worth remembering.

THE (ALMOST) SINO-SOVIET WAR (COLECTION OF ARTICLES)

A)When the Chinese Stole a Soviet Tank, They Nearly Went Nuclear!

Most people believe the world narrowly avoided nuclear catastrophe during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Though correct, that wasn’t the end of it. In 1969, the world stood on the brink of yet another atomic disaster because the Russians and the Chinese screwed up in 1892.
That was the year the Russian Empire and the Qing Dynasty agreed to recognize the Sarikol Range as the dividing line between them. Unfortunately, they never demarcated exactly where China ended and where Russia began.

The Abraham Lincoln Brigade – US Citizens Who Fought Against Fascism in Spain

0
SHARES
During the Spanish Civil War (1936 – 1939) a call went out from the Republican forces for communists and socialists around the world to come to Spain and join the fight against fascism. The democratically elected populist government had been challenged by General Franco’s Nationalist rebels.
As Franco had the support of Germany and Italy as well as some of the army units, the Republicans were soon at a disadvantage. Around 40,000 men and women from 52 countries responded and joined the fight on the Republican side. That number included a substantial number of Americans who become part of the XV International Brigade. The regiment was made up of volunteers from Britain, Ireland and South America alongside the American recruits.

Book Review: Seven Myths of the Crusades. (Revisonist)

Edited, with an Introduction and Epilogue, by Alfred J. Andrea and Andrew Holt.
Hackett Publishing, 2015
After languishing for long years in a post-Enlightenment intellectual backwater of fabrication, speculation, and distortion, the historical Crusades of the High Middle Ages began to attract serious scholarly attention in the nineteenth century. Continuing into the twentieth, these early efforts to gain a fresh understanding effectively culminated with Sir Steven Runciman’s A History of the Crusades, first published 1951-54, in three volumes. For four decades following, A History of the Crusades served as the standard Crusades reference for students, professors, and the reading public.

Oldest known book of the Americas points to how Mayans precisely recorded the movement of Venus

Dresden Codex. Credit: NOVA/PBSDresden Codex. Credit: NOVA/PBS
The Dresden Codex (also known as the Codex Dresdensis) is a Maya codex from the pre-Columbian era of 11th-12th century; and as such is considered as a copy of an older, original document that was possibly compiled in 8th century AD. In spite of the ‘derivative’ feature, the Dresden Codex is the oldest book written in the Americas known to historians, with its fascinating content of astronomical tables, including the Lunar Series and Venus table. Pertaining to the latter mentioned part, while the Venus table has intrigued researchers and historians over the years, the scope of its analysis has been mostly limited to numerology denominations. But this time around, researcher Gerardo Aldana, a professor of anthropology at UC Santa Barbara, has made a new case for the table, and his study links the astronomical and historical attributes of the Venus table that were possibly achieved by an early Maya scientist. In essence, the table might have alluded to an incredible astronomical discovery related to Venus more than a thousand years ago.

To that end, Aldana made use of epigraphy (study of hieroglyphics) combined with archaeology and astronomical records, and this ambit hints at how a correction in the ancient text relates to to the movements of Venus. The equation was probably made during the period between 8th-10th century (also known as Terminal Classic period) in the Mayan city of Chich’en Itza, (possibly) under the patronage of K’ak’ U Pakal K’awiil, the ruler/high-ranking official of the settlement. Aldana has this to say about the scribe who made this change in the Venus table –

This is what happens when Russia makes a B-2 stealth bomber knock-off

As the saying goes: “If you’re going to dream, dream big.”
That’s exactly what Russia did when it was evaluating designs for its next-generation bomber, dubbed the “PAK-DA” — which literally means “prospective aviation complex for long-range aviation.”
The initial concept was supposed to be a stealthy and insanely fast hypersonic aircraft. But then reality set in, and so far the idea’s been more wishful thinking than reality.

The Oseberg ship: The amazingly well preserved Viking burial ship from the 9th Century

The Oseberg burial mound contained numerous grave goods and two female human skeletons. The ship’s interment into its burial mound dates from 834 AD, but parts of the ship date from around 800, and the ship itself is thought to be older.
It was excavated by Norwegian archaeologist Haakon Shetelig and Swedish archaeologist Gabriel Gustafson in 1904-1905. This ship is widely celebrated and has been called one of the finest finds to have survived the Viking Age.
The ship and some of its contents are displayed at the Viking Ship Museum, in Bygdøy.

The ship is a clinker built “karv” ship built almost entirely of oak. It is 21.58 m long and 5.10 m broad, with a mast of approximately 9–10 m. With a sail of c. 90 m², the ship could achieve a speed up to 10 knots.
The ship has 15 pairs of oar holes, which means that 30 people could row the ship. Other fittings include a broad steering oar, iron anchor, gangplank, and a bailer. All images wiki

Meet Magnus Maximus, the Roman Usurper-Turned-Welsh Hero Who Inspired King Arthur

Magnus MaximusKing ArthurRoman EmpireCelts(Read the article on one page)
Fourteen hundred years before Britain voted to leave the European Union, it tried (and failed) to Brexit the Roman Empire. Under the leadership of Spanish-born soldier Magnus Maximus, a chunk of the Western Roman Empire rebelled against its Italian overlords, but ultimately failed to stay independent for too long. Maximus, though, inspired fascinating Welsh myths that turned him into a King Arthur- esque epic hero

Bodies of 200 Napoleonic Troops Discovered in Germany

On_the_big_road_(Vereshchagin)_-_detailNapoleon’s retreat by Vasily Vereshchagin
The bodies of some 200 soldiers from the Napoleonic army have been unearthed from a mass grave found near the German city of Frankfurt. The discovery was made during a construction project in Frankfurt, which turned the site into a massive excavation project led by the Frankfurt’s heritage and historic monuments.
According to the director of Heritage and Historic Monuments of Frankfurt, Andrea Hampel said that all the evidence indicates that these soldiers belong the Napoleon army that invaded Russia in 1812. She also added that the fact that coffins were buried in a non traditional orientation i.e. facing north-south instead of east-west, suggests that the graves were dig in great hurry.
This discovery is very significant for the historians since the invasion of Russia by Napoleon is of great importance for European historians. Napoleon rise to power was no less than a miracle, and after he took to the reigns of the vast French Empire it was only natural for a ruler like him to think of expansion at any cost. With Napoleon’s rise to power came the great unrest for other empires and little federations in the European continent. Napoleon was not only ruthless dictator, he was also a great general and strategist. During a conversation with one of his adversaries Napoleon had famously made the comment that he measured the victory and superiority of an empire with its ability to lose lives in the battlefield.
Historians pretty much agree upon the fact that Napoleon’s ill prepared and hasty invasion of Russia was actually the start point of his eventual downfall, which was sealed in the famous Battle of Waterloo in 1815 at the hands of Britain, Prussia and the Dutch.

Albert Göring, Hermann's anti-Nazi brother

Hermann Göring was an infamous Nazi, his brother Albert a sercret saviour of Jews and dissidents. William Hastings Burke tells the remarkable story of two very different brothers
albert goering
Albert Göring in Vienna, circa 1936 – he loathed the Nazis and helped many to escape
On the outskirts of Munich, among gnarled oak trees and sculpted angels, stands the grave of Albert Göring. I have made a pilgrimage to bid farewell to this man I never met, yet have grown to know so well. For three years I have retraced his footsteps, visiting his old haunts, trying to put a face to the Göring that history has forgotten. The surname is familiar, thanks to Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, the notorious Nazi leader and war criminal. Albert, his younger, little-known brother, was his antithesis – a Holocaust hero who devoted himself to saving hundreds of Jews and political dissidents, persecuted by the very regime his brother had helped to forge.

Did You Know? The French Army Invaded Germany in 1939 To Support The Polish

     Andrew Knighton

Germany was not the first country to go on the offensive on the western front of World War Two. That first attack came from France, which launched a brief and ineffective invasion of Germany in September 1939. This attack, intended to help the far-away Poles, became an embarrassing defeat and a harbinger of what would follow when Germany invaded France.

Germany refuses to open negotiations on Greek WWII Reparations

The people of Greece suffered enormously from the Nazi occupation of their country in WWII.  Their industry was devastated, as was the civilian infrastructure such as ports, roads, railways and bridges. Many Greeks were murdered by occupying soldiers, and the Nazis plundered their natural resources, leading to what the Greeks termed “The Great Famine.”  Not only that, the Nazi regime also forced the Greek central bank to loan Germany the sum of 476 million Reichsmarks at a zero interest rate.
In 1960, the Greek government accepted 115 million Marks from West Germany as compensation for these crimes but maintain that they did not consider this final payment of reparations but rather a down payment. Greece was not a signatory to the Two Plus Four Agreement in 1990, which settled the issue of reparation for the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union.
