Manuel I was the man that actually restored Byzantine prestige and power. But sadly he isn't that well known by the modern world over his success compared to complete Constantine XI Palaiologos who didn't do much or succeeded in anything really against the turks , but he is sadly more well know and remembered for just being the last king of the empire.
Maneul that saved and reinstated Byzantine Empire's place in Europe for another decades to come
Before his rule:
Byzantine was on the break of annihilation. Τhe Seljuks taken about the majority of Anatolia. The capital Constantinople was at their borders opened for an invasion. At the time Byzantine almost has no sort of naval dominance on the eastern Mediterranean anymore. Their economy was in ruins and as whole they were seen as simple land grab from their local neighbors. They almost had none or any sort of control or even influence in Anatolia that was until Manuel I ascended to the thrown things started to change for the better.
Under Maneul I rule:
This was a remarkable achievement in Anatolia taking over its entire coastal areas ensured Byzantine naval influence for the next decades to come. That which boasted trade in sea routes and tax incomes since these lands they were gaining had people, their people ofcourse were the majority even through Seljuk rule.
He helped bring a revival in Byzantine Hellenic culture and arts, he also expanded into the Balkans having and influencing complete naval dominance over the coasts increasing Byzantine prestige to its fullest he saved Byzantium and preserved it for the next centuries.
Manuel’s reputation seems to have risen in recent decades. He used to be blamed for wasting the empire’s resources and losing the battle of Myriokephalon - hence contributing to the empire’s decline. The current emerging view is that the decline came after his death.
