If Russia didn't collapse during WW1 and, in fact, was at the victory table, what would Russia's demands likely have been from the losers of WW1?

Dima Vorobiev · Former Soviet propaganda executive

The Russian map below from early 1915 shows the measure of Russian ambitions once the hubris of first months eased and a more realistic strategic thinking set in. A few details are interesting:

  • An occupation of Constantinople is not in the cards. Hard to say if it was recognition of Turkey’s defensive attitude at the start of the war or a reflection of some diplomatic pressure from the Allies.
  • Entire Ireland is shown as independent, while the French and Belgian territories are expanded far beyond Alsace. The commentaries to the left say that Britain will be remunerated by German overseas colonies
  • Hungary and Serbia become big independent nations at the expense of Austria an Romania. Romania is cut from the Black Sea altogether, and a Russian dependency Dobrudja is created along the coast.
  • Albania is partitioned between Serbia, Italy and Greece. No Croatia, no Bosnia, no Slovenia.
  • East Prussia becomes Russian.
  • Most of Tyrol goes to Switzerland, the rest to Italy.
  • Schleswig-Holstein goes to Denmark.
  • The whole of Poland is annexed by Russia. Slovakia is partitioned with Hungary.
