The openly lesbian vice-principal of a Belgian school has been driven out following what’s been described as a ‘homophobic riot’ by school children. The story has been transfixing Belgium.
It all kicked off on Tuesday October 12 during a Physical Education lesson in the classroom of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary [l’Institut des Filles de Marie] in the inner Brussels suburb of Saint-Gilles.
200 euros (US$277) were stolen from a student’s bag in the locker room. The girls in the class had insisted they all be searched to unmask who was guilty.
Daniel Pinte, president of the organizing authority of the school, told Le Soir that the students were told that there was no authority to search them so they all signed a release, were searched and the money was quickly found in the sock of one of the girls.
Vice-principal Eliane said:
“Once the booty was recovered, I went back to my office and I thought that the incident was closed.”
But shortly after the search, text messages start being passed around that accused Eliane of conducting naked searches. Rumors spread that she had undressed girls, even those wearing headscarves and even when the money was recovered.
Over the next two days, there were riots within the school and 100 students refused to enter the classrooms. Many primary and secondary students wore T-shirts with the inscription “button not my privacy. ” Students sat down in the playground demanding the resignation of the “perverse lesbian” Vice-Principal.
“The director asked me to take refuge and go through the back door after 33-year career,” said Eliane weeping.
The administration are supporting Eliane but still asked her to take leave.
According to Yagg, another gay teacher at the school had already been the subject last year of homophobic abuse from another teacher. She had to complain and come up with a lawyer so that management would take it seriously. After a year of suspension, that teacher is returning to the school later this month.
Yagg also notes that the Belgian Catholic bishop and noted homophobe Andre-Joseph Leonard just spoke out again against Catholic schools having to abide by anti-discrimination laws.
Says Yagg:
The real perpetrators of violence at the Institute of the Daughters of Mary are not necessarily the students, but those who, directly or indirectly, have stirred up hatred against a young teacher whose only crime in their view is not to be heterosexual.
The media announced that Eliane had resigned and that she will never go back to the Daughters of Mary school.
