VIEWPOINT: Brexit, Class and British ‘National’ Identity

VIEWPOINT: Brexit, Class and British ‘National’ Identity

Gurminder K. Bhambra
On the day before the referendum on our continued membership of the European Union, I was wondering about what the result would be and how I would respond. While I hoped that Remain would win, I couldn’t say that, even at that point, it would have felt like a victory given what it had already cost us. What had been unleashed in the weeks prior to the vote was the most toxic discourse on citizenship and belonging, and the rights that pertain as a consequence. This discourse provided a context for the brutal killing of a socialist and progressive MP before the vote followed by increasing racist and xenophobic attacks on migrants and minorities after the decision for ‘Brexit’.

You Break It, You Own It

The British vote by a narrow majority to leave the European Union is not the end of the world — but it does show us how we can get there.
A major European power, a longtime defender of liberal democracy, pluralism and free markets, falls under the sway of a few cynical politicians who see a chance to exploit public fears of immigration to advance their careers. They create a stark binary choice on an incredibly complex issue, of which few people understand the full scope — stay in or quit the E.U.
These politicians assume that the dog will never catch the car and they will have the best of all worlds — opposing something unpopular but not having to deal with the implications of the public actually voting to get rid of it. But they so dumb down the debate with lies, fear-mongering and misdirection, and with only a simple majority required to win, that the leave-the-E.U. crowd carries the day by a small margin. Presto: the dog catches the car. And, of course, it has no idea now what to do with this car. There is no plan. There is just barking.
Like I said, not the end of the world yet, but if a few more E.U. countries try this trick we’ll have quite a little mess on our hands. Attention Donald Trump voters: this is what happens to a country that falls for hucksters who think that life can just imitate Twitter — that there are simple answers to hard questions — and that small men can rearrange big complex systems by just erecting a wall and everything will be peachy.

Japanese Surrender in 1951 at Island of Anatahan

A group of stranded survivors of a Japanese vessel sunk by the American military found their way to the island of Anatahan, 75 nautical miles north of Saipan.
The island’s coast line is precipitous with landing beaches on the northern and western shore and a small sandy beach on the southwest shore.
Its steep slopes are furrowed by deep gorges covered by high grass.
This brooding cone jutting from the sea floor is a large, extinct volcano with two peaks and a grass covered flat field, the final resting place for a B-29 Superfortress that crashed upon returning from a bombing mission over Nagoya, Japan on January 3, 1945 killing the aircraft’s crew.

The ancient Roman capital of Dacia to be structurally restored via a EUR 4.5 million project

ancient-roman-capital-dacia-restored_1Ruins of the Roman Amphitheater at Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa,
Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa (or Colonia Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa) was the capital and the largest settlement in Roman-controlled Dacia (mainly corresponding to modern Romania and Moldova), with its name partially derived from Sarmizegetusa – the former religious and political center of Dacia. Founded during the reign of Trajan, possibly between 106-107 AD – when the Roman Empire stretched to its greatest extent, the fortified walls of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa encompassed an area of over 32 hectares. And since the city was governed under direct Roman rule because of its prestigious Ius Italicum status, the settlement was home to a profusion of Roman-architecture styled structures, including a forum, amphitheater, temples and even private houses. Unfortunately, the Roman-Dacian capital was destroyed by the invading Goths in 4th century. But now like a proverbial phoenix, Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa is all set to ‘rise’ from its ruins – with a definitive plan to restore and preserve many significant sections of the ancient capital.

The EUR 4.5 million restoration project has apparently scored all the government approvals, while the documentations for EU funding have also been successfully submitted. Carthage employed liquid cooling system for chariot races inside the city’s circus

carthage-liquid-cooling-system-chariot-races_1
Chariot racing was massively popular in ancient Rome; so much so that the world’s highest paid athlete and the first billionaire from their ranks possibly pertained to one Gaius Appuleius Diocles. According to classical studies professor Peter Struck (at University of Chicago), the ancient charioteer’s accumulated prize money equated to 35,863,120 sesterces, which is equivalent of around $15 billion or £9.6 billion. But while popular culture (including Ben-Hur) has presented the Roman penchant for brutal spectator sports, their long-time ancient rivals were also interested in chariot races fueled by skilled competitors and roaring crowds. We are obviously talking about Carthage – with the Circus of Carthage being the largest sporting arena outside Rome, built solely for such grand events. And now archaeologists have come across an advanced technological ambit that rather complemented the exhilaration of chariot races, and it entailed a nifty liquid cooling system that aided both horses and chariots.

For long historians were puzzled by the ‘efficiency’ of chariots (relating to both the horses and the vehicle) in Carthage, since the city-state was located in North Africa, traditionally known for its hot and arid climate. Simply put, even horses could have fainted mid-race in such rigorous conditions. But as a result of a recent excavation at the site of Circus of Carthage, experts have now identified the use of a special water resistant mortar in one of the structures of the stadium.

Cataphract

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Historical re-enactment of a Sassanid-era cataphract, complete with a full set of scale armor for the horse. Note the rider's extensive mail armor, which was de rigueur for the cataphracts of antiquity.
A cataphract was a form of armored heavy cavalry used in ancient warfare by a number of peoples in Western Eurasia and the Eurasian Steppe.

Do you have plans of taking a shotgun with you when it comes time to grab the bug out bag and get out of dodge? I know that shotguns are not normally part of bug out plans due to their size and weight. Most of us are already packing our handgun and a rifle, no one has room for a shotgun.

The Roman Denarius And The US Dollar: Birds Of A feather?,

Note: on the chart above, the listing of Trajan Decius between the emperors Titus (79-81 AD) and Hadrian (117-138 AD) looks to be a mistake. That period saw the reign of Trajan (98-117 AD). Trajan Decius (249-251 AD) followed Phillip the Arab (244-249 AD). He is correctly listed in order.
I found the chart showing the decline of the silver content of the Roman denarius quite fascinating. It reminded me of the chart of the loss of US$ purchasing power since 1774. I will show that chart again later. First, the denarius.

Witold Pilecki was a Polish soldier, a rittmeister of the Cavalry during the German invasion of Poland, the founder of the Secret Polish Armyresistance group in German-occupied Poland in November 1939, and a member of the underground Home Army, which was formed in February 1942.
As the author of Witold’s Report, the first intelligence report on Auschwitz concentration camp, Pilecki enabled the Polish government-in-exile to convince the Allies that the Holocaust was taking place.

In 1940, Pilecki presented to his superiors a plan to enter Germany’s Auschwitz concentration camp, gather intelligence on the camp from the inside, and organize inmate resistance. Until then, little had been known about the Germans’ running of the camp and it was thought to be an internment camp or large prison rather than a death camp. His superiors approved the plan and provided him with a false identity card in the name of “Tomasz Serafiński”. On 19 September 1940, he deliberately went out during a Warsaw street roundup and was caught by the Germans, along with some 2,000 innocent civilians. After two days detention in the Light Horse Guards Barracks, where prisoners suffered beatings with rubber truncheons, Pilecki was sent to Auschwitz and was assigned inmate number 4859.

Barbarian Invaders and Roman Collaborators

journals.lib.unb.ca
"The first ten years of the fifth century A.D. were the worst decade that Italy had experienced at the hands of foreign enemies since the days of Hannibal. In seven of these years powerful armies of barbarian invaders were on Italian soil. In each of the years 408, 409, and 410 Rome itself was besieged, and in 410 the city fell to a foreign enemy for the first time since Brennus and his Gauls captured it 800 years earlier. The civilized world was dumbfounded. There were less civilized Romans, however, who were by no means at a loss to know how to handle the situation."

How Napoleon Managed His Vast Armies

Charge of the French Cuirassiers at Friedland (1807) - by Ernest Meissonier

The wars fought by Napoleon Bonaparte were like nothing that had ever come before. His armies were vast in scale and constant in their activity, waging war across Europe and beyond. To manage such vast forces, he relied on a wide range of people and mechanisms to keep the military machine moving.

The Polish Pilots Who Flew In The Battle Of Britain!

The Polish Pilots Who Flew In The Battle Of Britain!

By Mariusz Gasior
The road to BritainOn 1 September 1939 the German Army, supported by the Air Force (Luftwaffe) and Navy (Kriegsmarine) invaded Poland from three sides. Polish defences, already strained under a powerful and innovative German assault, collapsed shortly after the Soviets launched their own invasion from the east on 17 September. Polish forces fought with distinction, but Poland was crushed by the two invaders in five weeks.

After their defeat, tens of thousands of Polish servicemen made their way to France to continue the struggle against a common enemy. The Polish Air Force (PAF) was recreated and established on French soil following a number of agreements between the French government and the Polish government-in-exile. Despite suffering a crushing defeat, Polish airmen maintained excellent morale and relished the opportunity to fight the Germans again.

The Bartini Beriev VVA-14 Vertikal`no-Vzletayuschaya Amphibia (vertical take-off amphibious aircraft) was a wing-in-ground-effect aircraft developed in the Soviet Union during the 1970s.[1] Designed to be able to take-off from the water and fly at high speed over long distances, it was to make true flights at high altitude, but also have the capability of “flying” efficiently just above the sea surface, using aerodynamic ground effect. The VVA-14 was designed by Italian-born designer Robert Bartini in answer to a perceived requirement to destroy United States Navy Polaris missile submarines.
