I can tell you something that most people do not know about the Sixth Army. I actually had a relative, a younger brother to my great-grandfather that was with the Sixth Army that was captured in Stalingrad and never came home.
Some people actually feel sorry for the German Sixth Army because of Stalingrad, but they often do not know the Sixth Army history. They only know one segment of when Paulus was commander and being surrounded by the Red-Army.
Before Friedrich Paulusthere was Walter von Reichenau who commanded the Sixth Army who issued the “Reichenau-Befehl” or Severity Order
on 10. October 1941.
The soldier in this eastern theatre is not only a man fighting in alliance with the rules of the strategy of war, but also a ruthless holder of standards of national formation and the punishment and harm in return for an injury or wrong which have been inflicted upon German and racially related nations. For this reason the soldier must learn fully to appreciate the necessity for the severe, but just revenge that must be shown to the subhuman species of the Jews. The Army has to aim at another purpose, and that would be the annihilation of the uprisings in the rear of the Wehrmacht, which have always been caused by Jews.
This was basically ordering the soldiers of the Sixth Army that part of their battle campaign was killing Jewish civilians. The soldiers of the Sixth Army are not innocent men. Don’t feel bad or sorry of their demise at Stalingrad. Do not forget what they did before Stalingrad.
Generalfeldmarschall von Reichenau later died of a stroke on 14. January 1942.

Note: The soldier in the sun-glasses is probably a MG 34 machine-gunner. He is carrying a pistol (issued) and on the other side of his belt is the MG 34 machine gun tool pouch. He is wearing rare sun-glasses. He had most likely fought in Nordafrika previously to be issued them. It is a haunting photo of what the lies ahead of their future.
