The ROA, also known as the "Vlasov Army",(in Russian: Русская
освободительная армия, Rússkaya osvobodítelnaya Ármiya; ROA,Russian Army
of liberation for its initials in the Latin alphabet ) also known as
the " Vlassov Army " was a Russian military formation of volunteers
armed by Nazi Germany during World War II.
This army was under the nominal command of the defecting general of the Red Army Andréi Vlasov and tried to unify all the Russians who were against the socialist system of the Soviet Union. Among the volunteers were a large number of Soviet prisoners of war, Ostarbeiter (workers from Eastern Europe) and emigrated white Russians (including anti-Communist veterans of the White Army who participated in the Russian Civil War).
Other soldiers were Cossacks or members of other ethnic groups who had a longstanding aversion to Soviet rule. However, the great majority of those hundreds of thousands who joined the Russian Liberation Army did so for nationalistic, even patriotic reasons. Certainly there was an element of expediency in their decision to serve, but many of them had experience with Stalin’s mercurial brutality, and believed that he had betrayed the promise of the 1917 revolution. They had little to lose by turning their arms against him.Towards the end of the war, the Russian divisions acquired their own uniforms, insignia, tanks, artillery, even operated their own air force using German jets. They had an anthem, We Go on the Wide Fields, which included the verse, “We’ll fight the Bolsheviks for the freedom of our motherland. (Мыидемнабой с большевиками Засвободу Родинысвоей.)ROA's insignia, the blue St. Andrews' cross insigne also appeared on vehicles and aircraft belonging to the ROA.
On November 14, 1944, his troops changed the official name of the Armed Forces of the People's Liberation Committee of Russia (VS-KONR). On January 28, 1945, the separation of the Russian divisions of the Wehrmacht and their official transfer to the command of the KONR was proclaimed.
On May 5th 1945 Vlasov his officers and ROA soldiers joined to czech insurgents in Prague and fought the nazis .It was pointless. The USSR was determinated to punish all military soviets who had defected to nazi Germany.
On May 12th ,Andrej Vlasov, Serghej Bunjacenko and Michail Meandrov and other vlasovite top ranks were captured and brought to Lubjanka in Moscow.
On following year all were tried, sentenced to death and hanged for treason on Agost 1th 1946.The most of the ROA soldiers was tried by a military trial, shot or sentenced to a long term of forced labors.
