By Christos Voulgaris
This rare photo shows a mixed group of Spanish and Greek ( from Patras city ) members of the anarchist Durruti Column in Catalonia 1936.Behind them it's a " Tiznao", a improvised armoured lorry whose armour was made by Notis Papazachsrapoulos (sitting, second from the right), an anarchist ironsmith which before coming to Spain was working at Patras Port.He died later fighting in the battle of Madrid 1936
The effectiveness of this kind of vehicles was limited, because they were very slow;also they had poor armament, usually only light and heavy machine guns; and thin armor from metal plates of a few millimeters.thick
The flags shown in front are the those of Spanish anarchist movement ( red and black ) and the Second Hellenic Republic 1924-1935 ( blue and white ) which was distinguished from that of the Kingdom of Greece ( 1830-1924 & 1936-1945) by the absence of the crown on the centre.
In the side ( not shown clearly in this photo ) we read: "Hermanos no tirar" / "Brothers do not shot."We do not know exactly the meaning of this message, but it's possible that they did not want to be shot or something like this, because they were fighting against brothers».
