In case anyone has forgotten, Russia is firmly supporting President Assad in the Syrian Civil War. Russia has a couple of reasons to do so, namely a naval base on Syrian soil and 20,000 Russian citizens. Because of this and to give a response to moves by NATO nations to support the FSA. According to the Russian Interfax news agency, the ships being deployed are the Nikolai Filchenkov Large Landing Ship and the Vice Admiral Kulakov, a destroyer. In addition to the 600 troops, the ships also contain 20 tanks, 15 armored troop carriers, and the ability to conduct anti-submarine warfare. There are also reports of Russian aircraft being placed on standby to provide air cover if needed.
This is the latest move in the rising proxy war between NATO on one side and Russia and Iran on the other. While the pretext of the Russian move is to protect their people, all it will take for a further escalation is for any of those citizens or the marines themselves to come under attack. As Tavern Keepers previously reported, Russia has already begun forming a fleet in the Mediterranean for the first time since the end of the Cold War. Considering how many factions there are in the country with their own disparate goals, that doesn’t seem to be very far fetched. The cool courtesies expressed between President Obama and President Putin at the recent G-8 Summit show that it won’t take much for the escalation to continue.
