JULY: The 2nd GUARDS RIFLE DIVISION
started as the 127th Rifle Division and was mobilised at Rostov-On-Don
which was part of the North Caucasus Military District.It consisted of:
395th, 535th and 875th Rifle Regiments.
423rd Artillery Regiment.
168th Anti-Tank battalion.
278th Sapper Battalion.
182nd Reconnaissance Battalion.
455th Anti-Aircraft Battalion.
465th Signal Battalion.
184th Medical Battalion.
Formation was completed at Kharkov in July 1940.

1941
JUNE: The Division was still part or the North Caucasus Military District.
JUNE: 22nd: The Division moved westward shortly after being united with the 16th Army out of the Trans-Baikal Military District.
JULY: Reserve of the Supreme High Command (RVGK) with the 16th Army.The Division fought at Yelna, and it was in this action as part of the 24th Combined Arms Army (CAA) that through meritorious service it earned the title “GUARDS”.
SEPTEMBER: Reserve front with the 24th Combined Arms Army (CAA).
SEPTEMBER: 18th: The 127th Rifle Division was awarded the GUARDS title, and re-designated the 2nd GUARDS RIFLE DIVISION. The elements of the Division retained their original designations but with the addition of Guards in the title. (ie; the 395th Rifle Regiment became the 395th Guards Rifle regiment). A new 127th Rifle Division was raised in the Pri-Volga Military District the following year.
SEPTEMBER: The Division fought at Glukov.
OCTOBER: Fought against General Guderians 2nd Panzer Group, though missed the encirclement but suffered huge losses.
JUNE: The Division was still part or the North Caucasus Military District.

OCTOBER:
The Division fought at KURSK, and was re-inforced with 3000 men from
the Kursk Militia ‘Fighter’ (Volunteer) Battalions and 2000 communist
Party Members from Kursk City. The 875th Guards Rifle Regiment was
completely reformed from the militia by the end of the month.
DECEMBER: Fought at Kursk with the 13th Combined Arms Arm.

APRIL: In the Crimea with the 11th Guards Rifle Corps attached to the Separate Maritime Army.
APRIL: 8th until MAY: Rather than chase the enemy across the Kerch Straits, the 2nd Guards rounded the sea of Azov along its north shore to descend upon the Perechop Isthmus connecting the Crimea to the Ukraine to aid in bottling Hitler’s 17th Army. During this engagement, the 2nd Guards Taman won the ORDER of SUVOROV II CLASS.
MAY: Once again at Sevastopol.
JULY: Moving north with the 2nd Guards Red Banner CAA into the Baltic Area.
OCTOBER: Memel.
DECEMBER: Latvia.

1945
JANUARY: East Prussia operation. Believed to be part of the 2nd Byelorussian front
commanded by Marshal Konstantin Rokossovsky at this time.
MARCH: Kurischer Haff, north of Koenigsberg.
APRIL: KOENIGSBERG. The 2nd GUARDS RIFLE DIVISION Battled against elements of the German elite Panzer Grenadier Regiment ‘Grossdeutschland’ who had retreated from Memel.
POST WAR YEARS
JULY: Awarded the honorific title 'in the name of the M.I. kalinin'.
JANUARY 1947: Moscow.
1970: Took part in Exercise Dvina, in the Byelorussian Military District as a motoriserd division.
1970's: Permanently based at Alabino, outside Moscow along with the 11th cavalry Division as "court" divisions for the Moscow Parades.
AUGUST: 18 - 21st 1991: Defended the Russian White House during the anti - gorbachev coup.

The 6th Guards Rifle regiment was awarded the title SEVASTOPOL and the ORDER of THE RED BANNER.
The 15th Guards Rifle Regiment was awarded the title SHAULIAI and THE ORDER OF THE RED BANNER.
The 21st Guards Artillery Regiment was awarded the title SEVASTOPOL and the decoration ORDER of THE KUTUZOV.
Individual decorations to troops of the 2nd Guards Atman, order of The Red banner, Order of The Survivor Rifle Division included 33 soldiers decorated with the title "HERO OF THE SOVIET UNION" and approximately 16,000 other medals and awards.

1942 to 1943 general Major F.Z. Zakorov.
